.DISCUSSION...
Today: Strong southerly winds could result in rapid and uncontrolled
fire growth this afternoon, should any fires develop. Outdoor
burning is not advised today. Deep vertical mixing and a tightening
MSLP-850 mb height gradient on the eastern periphery of a deepening
lee cyclone will foster strong southerly winds across the entire
area. 00 UTC 10/04 forecast soundings indicate ~35-45 knot southerly
flow will be present within and throughout a ~10,000 ft mixed-layer
(from the surface to ~600 mb), suggesting sustained winds on the
order of 30-40 mph and gusts up to 55 mph across much, or all, of the
area this afternoon and early evening (generally prior to sunset).
Given that fire weather partners report that fuels are marginal.. and
that minimum relative humidity readings are expected to range
between 15-25%.. we will forego the issuance of a Red Flag Warning.
Outflow emanating from high-based showers and thunderstorms assoc/w
an eastward advancing lee trough/cyclone in northeast Colorado (Fire
Weather Zones 252-253-254) may result in locally abrupt wind shifts
late this afternoon and early this evening (~4-9 pm MDT).
Tonight-Sunday: Winds will substantially weaken from west to east
late this evening and overnight.. when winds will shift to the NW-
NNW on the western periphery of the modest, eastward advancing lee
trough/cyclone. Surface pressure rises, low-level cold advection and
somewhat breezy (15-25 mph) N to NNE winds will follow in the wake of
an effective cold frontal passage (surface high pressure building
into the region from the north) Sunday morning.. and may persist
throughout the day on Sunday. Cooler temperatures, higher relative
humidity and weaker winds will preclude hazardous fire weather
conditions on Sunday.
