.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

1) A round of heavy snow continues to push through portions of NE
Montana with snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour and quarter
mile visibility at times. The snow will let up this evening though
gusty northwest winds may cause patchy blowing snow.

2) Overnight lows by Thursday morning will range between 10 and 25
below with wind chills as cold as 35 below.

3) The next round of accumulating snow is expected by Friday.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

The HREF captured a round of heavy snowfall well for today as it
tracked west to east across NE Montana. The snowfall rates of up
to an inch an hour with quarter mile visibility at times continue
near Sidney and Glendive and thus have expanded the Winter Weather
Advisory for those southeast zones.

As the snow ends in the next few hours, gusty northwest winds can
lead to patchy blowing snow at times this evening. Otherwise
attention will turn to the cold arctic temperatures tonight and
Thursday. Lows will range from 10 to 25 below with wind chills as
low as 35 below.

The NBM still shows the 24 hour probability of 2 inches or more of
snow along and south of Highway 2 ranging from 30 to 70 percent by
Saturday morning. This will be the next event worth messaging and
may necessitate headlines.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:

NBM and NBM 90 were blended for near term winds to capture
expected stronger wind gusts leading to patchy blowing snow this
evening. Pops were also adjusted slightly to slow the exit of
snowfall by an hour or two in the east based on existing trends.
Otherwise, NBM handled things well.

Confidence is high for snow ending and cold temperatures and
dangerous wind chills becoming the focus for tonight. Moderate
focus exists for the next round of snow on Friday with the
uncertainties around the exact totals and northern extent.

.AVIATION...

A gradual return to VFR is expected tonight, though patchy blowing
snow may lead to MVFR visibility at times.

Look for northwest winds ranging from 10 to 20 kts, gusting to 25
kts at times.
