Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
454 AM CDT Fri Oct 10 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Less windy today (north-northeast 5-10 mph), but relative humidity
values will be down to around 30% this afternoon as dry air
filters in behind a frontal passage that occurred this past night.
Overall, a moderate fire danger will be in place today due to the
lower RH values.

Winds will pick up again this weekend, with gusts of 25-35 mph
likely on both Saturday and Sunday area-wide. RH values will be
lowest (around 30%) along and east of I-29 on Saturday, but the
gusty winds will lead to a widespread high fire danger area-wide
Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the lowest RH values (again around
30%) will be in south-central South Dakota. Very warm temperatures
and gusty winds will once again lead to a high to locally very
high GFDI Sunday afternoon. Rain chances increase on Sunday and
could limit the fire danger in some areas, but confidence is low-
to-medium on where the best chance of rain will be at this time.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the moderate
category this afternoon. Marginal weather conditions or
lowering moisture content of grasses, and other dry organic
material on the ground, indicate that there is some potential
for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be closely
monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR SATURDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the high category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.
