AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
347 PM PST Tue Feb 4 2025

.SYNOPSIS...A band of rain and snow is moving through the area and
and on to the east. Showers are expected to return later this
evening and overnight in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Wednesday
and Thursday rain and snow showers will continue, mainly in
Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Friday and Saturday may see a
few lingering showers with dry and chilly weather expected Sunday
and Monday.

.DISCUSSION...A cold upper level trough is over the northeast
Pacific. This afternoon and shortwave moving around the base of
the low is bringing another round of rain and snow to the area.
Snow levels are lowest in the north with snow levels around 500 to
1000 feet in Humboldt county. Some snow has even been reported
down to near sea level. Farther north in Del Norte county there is
also cold air, but very little precip is falling near the coast
with some heavier precip farther inland. Late this afternoon and
evening rain and snow are coming to an end as this shortwave
moves out of the area. Once this moves out of the area chilly
temperatures are expected. Any areas that do clear out may see
freezing temperatures. This could make potentially dangerous
travel conditions tonight if black ice forms.

Late this evening and overnight the next round of rain and snow
showers are expected to move into the area. This is expected to
bring precip to mainly Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Some light
precip is expected in Trinity county and northern Mendocino
county. This will arrive with some colder air and snow levels are
expected to be around 1000 to 1500 feet possibly warming to 2000
feet by Wednesday afternoon. 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected
with locally higher amounts at the higher elevations. This cold
air may bring some instability to the waters and the coastal
areas of Humboldt and Del Norte counties. This could bring some
small hail showers or even a thunderstorm.

There may be a brief break in the rain Wednesday night before
another round of rain and snow is expected on Thursday. Snow
levels are expected to be higher with this, around 2500 to 3000
feet. So there may still be impacts to the highway passes.

Friday and Saturday the upper level trough remains near the area.
This will keep temperatures chilly, especially the overnight
lows. Some very light precip is possible, but at this point it
doesn`t look too likely. Sunday and Monday cool and dry conditions
are expected. MKK

.AVIATION...Flight categories have been deteriorating this afternoon
with another surge of rainfall. Heaviest precipitation is still
focused in the southern half of the CWA; IFR conditions are expected
to continue at UKI for the next several hours as a stationary front
moves onshore. Coastal terminals will see broken MVFR ceilings and
scattered showers tonight into tomorrow with the arrival of a cold
upper trough. Model soundings are indicative of potential for
shallow convection embedded within these showers across the northern
Humboldt and Del Norte coasts on Wednesday - potential for scattered
thundershowers with small hail is possible especially after 12 PM.
UKI will remain largely MVFR with periods of IFR ceilings overnight
into Wednesday with higher potential for brief periods of clearing
than the coast. Generally unsettled/showery conditions expected to
continue through the day before a stronger system arrives Thursday.

&&

.MARINE...Gusty northerly winds and steep seas diminish in the
southern waters this evening as a stationary front finally moves SE.
Winds will turn southwesterly and redevelop on Wednesday as a cold
upper trough and surface low cycles off the PNW coast - small craft
conditions are likely with 20 to 25 knot gusts and 7 to 10 foot
seas, especially in the northern waters. Scattered convection
embedded within lingering rain showers is also possible as this low
gradually weakens. Several small to moderate swells will make for a
conflicting sea state for the remainder of the week as winds turn
northerly again by Friday.
