Deep southwesterly flow ahead of an upper-level entering the Pacific Northwest will persist over the Great Basin today. Enhanced downslope drying leeward of the Sierra Nevada supporting erosion of a shallow inversion under an efficient boundary layer mixing environment will lead to very low relative humidity of around 10% in some valleys this afternoon. Sustained south to southwest winds of 10-20 mph and low relative humidity will lead to meteorologically elevated fire weather conditions across portions of southwest and central NV this afternoon. However, recent precipitation across the state and poor fuel receptiveness will mitigate a widespread fire weather concern for today. ..Williams.. 10/09/2025 .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 0144 AM CDT Thu Oct 09 2025/ ...Synopsis... An upper ridge will remain in place across the central and southern CONUS, while an upper trough impinges on the West Coast, and a progressive mid-level shortwave trough amplifies over the Great Lakes today. Surface high pressure will overspread much of the U.S. east of the Mississippi River, promoting quiescent fire weather conditions. Some dry or breezy conditions may accompany southerly flow ahead of a surface low over the Great Basin. However, the lack of favorably overlapping dry and windy conditions, atop fuels receptive to fire spread, preclude any fire weather highlights this outlook. ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov/fire for graphic product... $$
