138 FXUS63 KDLH 070505 AFDDLH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Duluth MN 1205 AM CDT Wed May 7 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Very low humidity each afternoon will drive elevated fire weather conditions. - Cooler, near normal temps Wednesday and Thursday. Above normal temps return Friday. - There is a small chance (15 to 25 percent) for rain showers Friday evening/night, but widespread precipitation is not expected. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 312 PM CDT Tue May 6 2025 TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY...Early afternoon satellite imagery showed mostly clear skies across the region. A weak cold front evident by a wind shift was approaching from the northwest, with some clouds trailing this surface front. There were a few returns on radar, but cloud bases were at or above 10kft, so nothing more than sprinkles is expected as it moves through. This cold front will bring northeast winds before it washes out along with and slightly cooler temperatures for Wednesday. Highs will generally be in the mid 60s across the region, with northeast winds keeping temperatures closer to 50 along the lakeshore. This dry air mass will once again lead to low humidity both this afternoon and on Wednesday. A few locations could see RH values drop into the teens, and on Wednesday the mid 20s. Fortunately winds will be light. THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...Surface return flow on Thursday will bring slightly warmer temperatures, and this trend will continue through the weekend as the overall upper level pattern builds another ridge across the Central CONUS. Another weakening frontal boundary will move through on Friday, and will bring a small chance (15 to 25 percent) for rain showers. Temperatures will warm again over the weekend as that weak front lifts northward again. The only difference this time around is southerly winds will be a bit stronger, the low level thermal ridge will be warmer, and the end result is highs in the low to mid 80s, possibly warmer, for early next week. && .AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z THURSDAY/... Issued at 1204 AM CDT Tue May 6 2025 VFR conditions through the forecast period. Winds will veer easterly and east-southeasterly Wednesday. There may be a brief period of LLWS at DLH before 08Z as winds aloft are expected to veer into better alignment with the surface winds by that time. Efficient mixing is expected again Wednesday afternoon which should result in gusty winds. && .MARINE /FOR NEAR SHORE WATERS OF WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR/... Issued at 312 PM CDT Tue May 6 2025 A weak frontal boundary will move across the region this evening, bringing northwest winds. These winds will become more northeast tonight into Wednesday which may create conditions hazardous to small craft in the Twin Ports and along the South Shore east of the Bayfield Peninsula late tonight into Wednesday. Northeast winds will continue Wednesday night into Thursday, eventually becoming more southerly on Friday.
