DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK
----------------------
At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lowell was located
near latitude 13.3 North, longitude 155.2 West. Lowell is moving
toward the west near 10 mph (17 km/h). This general motion with a
gradual decrease in forward speed is expected during the next
few days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher
gusts.  Lowell is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Wind Scale.  Some fluctuations in intensity are expected
during the next few days. However, Lowell is expected to remain a
major hurricane for the next several days.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the
center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles
(150 km).

The minimum central pressure estimated from the NOAA Hurricane
Hunter aircraft data is 933 mb (27.55 inches).


HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF: Swells generated by Lowell are spreading northward and will
affect portions of the Hawaiian Islands during the next several
days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and
rip current conditions. Please consult products from your local
weather office.
