...EARLY SEASON COOL SPELL AUGUST 18TH AND 19TH FOR NORTHERN AND
EASTERN MAINE...

An unseasonable cool spell affected Northern and Eastern Maine early
this week. Patchy frost was reported in parts of the area.
Additionally several sites saw their lowest temperatures this early
in the season in decades.

In Houlton, the low temperature on August 18th was 39 degrees. This
tied the daily record low temperature (1985). The low temperature on
August 19th was 35 degrees. This low was one degree off the record
low temperature of 38 degrees for the date (2005). However, it tied
for the second earliest occurrence of a low temperature 35 degrees
or lower in Houlton. The record earliest date for such a temperature
was August 17th, 1979 (35 degrees). Records in Houlton date back to
1948.

In Caribou, no daily record low temperatures were set. That said,
the low temperature on August 19th dipped to 38 degrees. This low
was one degree off the daily record low temperature of 37 degrees
(2005). This also tied for the second earliest occurrence of a low
temperature of 38 degrees or lower in Caribou. The record earliest
date for such a temperature was August 13th, 1941 (36 degrees).
Records in Caribou date back to 1939.

In Millinocket, no daily record low temperatures were set. However,
the low temperature on August 19th dropped to 41 degrees. This was
the lowest temperature recorded in Millinocket this early in the
season since August 17th, 1963 (40 degrees). Records in Millinocket
date back to 1903.

In Bangor, no daily record low temperatures were set. However, the
low temperature on August 19th was 44 degrees. This low was one
degree off the daily record low of 43 degrees (1926). Additionally,
the low on the 19th was the lowest temperature recorded in Bangor
this early in the season since August 14th, 1998 (44 degrees).
Records in Bangor date back to 1925.
