245 FXUS61 KCAR 260843 AFDCAR Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Caribou ME 443 AM EDT Sat Jul 26 2025 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will build across the region today, then slowly move southeast tonight into Sunday. A weak weather disturbance will cross the area Sunday night followed by high pressure early Monday. A cold front will approach Monday night and move through on Tuesday. Another cold front will cross the area Wednesday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... Update... Have updated to include an Air Quality Alert in effect through 11 PM late this evening for the Interior and Coastal Downeast regions. Previous Discussion... A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for the Downeast coast from 8 AM this morning to 8 PM this evening. High pressure will cross the region today, begin to move southeast tonight, then exit southeast of Nova Scotia Sunday. A weak cold front/pre-frontal trof should begin to approach northern Maine later Sunday afternoon. Generally expect mostly clear skies today through tonight. Smoke/haze will generally remain west of the region today, However, smoke/haze could begin to return to mostly western portions of the forecast area later today into tonight. Due to uncertainty regarding the extent of the smoke/haze, have not included this in the forecast yet though this will have to be monitored. Could also have the slight chance of a shower/thunderstorm across northern areas later Sunday afternoon in advance of the approaching weak cold front/pre-frontal trof. High temperatures today will range from the mid to upper 70s north, to around 80 to the lower 80s Downeast. Low temperatures tonight will range from the mid 50s north to the mid to upper 50s Downeast. High temperatures Sunday will range from the mid to upper 80s north, to around 80 the lower 80s interior Downeast. Mid to upper 70s are expected along the Downeast coast with onshore winds. && .SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/... We will remain in nearly zonal flow into mid-week before a trough begins to amplify over Eastern Canada late in the week. A broad upper level ridge of high pressure will be to our southwest Sunday night as a weak shortwave trough slides to our east. A weak upper level disturbance and shortwave crossing the area may bring an isolated shower to the north Sunday night. Otherwise, the area will begin partly cloudy then mostly clear late at night. High pressure and upper ridging will build over the region on Monday bringing a sunny and very warm day with inland highs well into the mid 80s. Another weak upper level disturbance will cross the area Monday night, possibly with a few showers over northern and western areas. The shortwave weakens and loses moisture as it slides east and southeast late at night diminishing chances for showers further southeast. A weak frontal boundary will linger over the area Tuesday as another shortwave begins to approach from the west. A large upper trough will begin to dig to our west on Tuesday. Upper level flow out from this trough, and around an upper level ridge well to our south, will result in some diffluent flow which, combined with the weak lingering frontal boundary, will likely produce some showers and possibly thunderstorms over the north. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... Weak upper level difluence will continue over the area Tuesday night into Wednesday as a very weak surface frontal boundary remains across the area. This will bring continued small chances for showers through Wednesday. Otherwise, Tuesday night and Wednesday will remain partly cloudy. The air will cool just a bit on Wednesday following the weak front. As we go into late week, a large upper trough will continue to take shape and amplify a bit over eastern Canada. This will bring partly cloudy and cooler conditions Wednesday night into Thursday with highs Thursday from the low 70s north to the mid 70s south. The upper trough will continue to dig nearby to our north on Friday bringing a continuation of unseasonably cool weather to start the month of August. It will be partly cloudy north to mostly clear south. Cool air aloft may produce just enough low level instability for a stray shower across the north on Friday. Otherwise, mainly dry weather is expected through late week. && .AVIATION /09Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... NEAR TERM: Generally VFR conditions are expected across the region today through Sunday. However, variable conditions are possible in any patchy fog overnight. Occasional MVFR visibilities are also possible this afternoon into tonight with any smoke/haze. North/northwest winds 10 to 15 knots, becoming variable 5 to 10 knots today. Variable winds 5 to 10 knots, becoming south/southwest tonight. Southwest winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 20 knots Sunday. SHORT TERM: Sunday night...VFR. Light SW wind. Monday...VFR. Light W wind. Monday night...VFR, except possibly briefly MVFR at times in showers north. Light W wind. Tuesday...VFR except in any shower over the north. Light W wind. Tuesday night...VFR, possibly lowering to MVFR over the far north late. Light NW wind. Wednesday...VFR. Light W wind. && .MARINE... NEAR TERM: Winds/seas below small craft advisory levels today through Sunday. SHORT TERM: Light winds and seas of 1 to 2 ft are expected through the coming week. Humid air over the cooler waters may result in some mist or patchy fog through mid-week. Drier, cooler air should then result in good visibility during late week. && .CAR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... ME...Air Quality Alert until 11 PM EDT this evening for MEZ015>017- 029-030.
