.DISCUSSION...
Today through Monday...
Ridging currently over the northwest US will allow for warm and
dry conditions for our region the next few days. Above average
temperatures will be in place as a result with highs forecast to
be 10 to 20 degrees above average (upper 50s to 70 degrees)
through Thursday. Additionally, a few record high temperatures
for Thursday could be set with Billings attempting to break the
record of 69 and Miles City 66 degrees. Ahead of troughing set to
move in Friday, a round of gap winds is expected for the
Livingston/Nye areas Thursday evening through Friday afternoon.
Current analysis show the pressure gradient of 10-12 mb from IDA-
LWT with 700 mb winds of 35-40 kts. This is giving about a 60%
chance of wind gusts to at least 50 mph and a 40% chance of wind
gusts to 60 mph. The need for a Wind Advisory will be monitored
over the next day. As troughing moves through Friday, not much is
expected in the way of precipitation as the region remains under
westerly flow. The Beartooth/Absaroka mountains have about a
30-60% chance of getting at least 4 inches of snow, with about a
10-20% chance of any snowfall in the associated foothills Friday
through Saturday. The Bighorns have less than a 30% chance for an
inch of snowfall. As for the plains, ensembles are predicting
around a tenth of an inch of rain or less. High temperatures
following the front will be in the 50s west to 60s east Friday.
For the reminder of the period, highs look to be in the upper 40s
to 50s. The forecast towards the latter half of the weekend
becomes more uncertain as ensembles are depicting troughing off
the northwest coast as well as a low moving up from the southwest
US. How this plays out will have an impact on timing for cooler
air and precipitation. Confidence is however increasing that a
cool down to normal to near to below normal temperatures is coming
early to mid week next week. TS
.AVIATION...
Breezy west to northwesterly winds will prevail today. By late
this afternoon into this evening, winds will subside across the
region. While mid to high clouds are expected to increase tonight
into Wednesday morning, VFR conditions will prevail. Arends
