.AVIATION /18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday/...
Issued at 1150 AM MDT Wed Aug 12 2026
Winds are currently light and VRB due to a cyclone. A little
uncertain with the wind direction for the next few hours as the
cyclone evolves, but expect a general east/northeast wind early
this afternoon. However, there is a chance winds could turn more
southeast instead.
We are still on track for convection to begin across the high
terrain, with outflow winds making a direction change most likely
to the west/northwest. Some guidance has hinted at the I-25
Corridor missing out on the bulk of precipitation this afternoon
(convection becomes more organized east of the airports), so have
changed to a PROB30 instead of a TEMPO to reflect that
uncertainty. Regardless, any nearby convection should bring strong
wind gusts. With the amount of moisture in the atmosphere, some of
the strongest storms will produce heavy rainfall, so have reduced
visibility in the PROB30 group.
Some uncertainty with wind direction behind the convection this
evening, however generally think it will have an easterly
component to it due to outflow winds from storms east of the
terminals. Light winds expected overnight, with the potential for
low clouds coming in by 10Z-12Z. Have kept the TEMPO in there as
is, but some models indicate ceilings lower than 2000 feet.
For tomorrow, another round of showers and thunderstorms are
possible in the afternoon. With better moisture entering the
region, it is more likely that any shower that occurs will produce
heavy rainfall. For this reason, have introduced a PROB30 with 3SM
as the visibility.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/...
Issued at 1102 AM MDT Wed Aug 12 2026
VFR conditions and mainly dry weather are anticipated this
forecast period for all of the terminals. Afternoon and early
shower and thunderstorm development is anticipated, however, the
highest coverage of development will stay over and near the
higher terrain. Given the low chance that a few storms do make
it off of the mountains this afternoon, have maintained the
prob30 at all sites.
The main impacts with winds this period will be early this
evening for COS and PUB as a fairly strong front pushes south
over the plains. Made little changes to the wind shift, though
did bump the shift by an hour for COS and did increase the
speeds and gusts by a couple of knots. Will keep an eye on this
shift, as a small window of higher speeds and gusts will be
possible.

Storms are expected to develop region-wide today. Cigs may
periodically fall below ILS conditions at ASE, EGE, RIL, and TEX
as a result. Less confidence exists in if rainfall will be heavy
enough to reduce vis to MVFR or lower. Storms will continue into
the late evening and potentially through the early portion of
the night. Gusty and variable outflow winds from storms could
pass over any terminal. Most of these winds should be capped at
25 kts, but a few stronger gusts cannot be ruled out.

Salt Lake City Aviation Discussion
Issued at 1813 UTC Wednesday, August 12, 2026

.AVIATION...KSLC...The SLC terminal will see VFR conditions
throughout the day. Northwesterly winds are expected to return to
the south by 14Z before shifting back to the south between 18Z and
20Z. There is a 20 percent chance winds stay northerly or light and
variable during the morning. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
will develop once again, with a 30 percent chance of storms
impacting the terminal, primarily during the late afternoon and
early evening.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions are expected
across the airspace today with generally light and terrain driven
winds from thunderstorms. Convective activity is expected to
dissipate over the next couple of hours across northern Utah, with
scattered showers and thunderstorms again developing across the area
this afternoon, persisting into the evening. Any storms that develop
will be capable of producing gusty and erratic winds, bringing a low
chance of mountain obscurations and temporary MVFR conditions due to
heavy rainfall.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/...
Issued at 1056 AM MDT Wed Aug 12 2026
Widespread light rain showers will be across the area through the
TAF period. Though rain won`t prevail, occasional light rain is
likely to occur at most sites. Have mostly kept mention out of TAFs
due to the expected low frequency of rain occurring, but all sites
carry at least a 15 percent chance today and tonight. In any case,
broken to overcast clouds will be around through most of the period
as well, but should remain VFR.
Please see the Aviation Weather Center and/or CWSU ZDV and ZLC for
the latest information on icing and turbulence forecasts.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/...
Issued at 1138 AM MDT Wed Aug 12 2026
West southwest flow aloft will continue, while a shortwave
trough aloft moves from north central Wyoming at midday to
northwest South Dakota this evening. Meanwhile, at the surface,
low pressure will deepen across eastern Colorado with a few low
level convergence axises developing across southeast Wyoming and
western Nebraska. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will
develop across southeast Wyoming this afternoon and develop and
propagate eastward across western Nebraska this evening. Some of
the storms across the eastern tier of southeast Wyoming counties
and the Nebraska Panhandle, will become strong to severe this
afternoon and evening.
Wyoming TAFS...Inherited TAFS from our midnight shift forecaster
were in good shape, with only some minor tweeks needed. Based
on the 12Z NAM and the consistent runs of the HRRR, high
confidence in isolated to scattered thunderstorms developing
mainly east of a Rawlins to Lusk line through 21Z, with storms
intensifying from 21Z to 00Z along and east of a Lusk to
Cheyenne line, and ending by 01Z, before more isolated to
scattered showers and a few thunderstorms occur this evening.
Thunderstorms will produce erratic winds and gusts up to 40
knots, with a few storms from Lusk to Cheyenne possibly seeing
higher wind gusts. Storms will produce occasional MVFR,
otherwise VFR prevails. Widespread MVFR ceilings and
visibilities due to fog will develop from 08Z to 15Z along and
east of Interstate 25. Typically gusty diurnal winds to near 30
knots will occur until sunset.
Nebraska TAFS...Inherited TAFS from our midnight shift
forecaster were in decent shape, thus only some minor tweeks
needed. Using the 12Z NAM and the consistent past few runs of
the HRRR, high confidence in isolated to scattered thunderstorms
developing along the Wyoming-Nebraska state line around 20-22Z
and strengthening and propagating eastward across the panhandle
well into the evening hours. Some of the storms will become
strong to severe this afternoon and evening, producing erratic
winds gusting up to 45 knots, with a few storms, most likely
across the northern Panhandle, producing winds gusts in excess
of 50 knots along with some hail of one inch diameter or larger,
along with locally heavy rain. The strongest storms will
produce localized MVFR ceilings and visibilities this evening.
Widespread IFR and MVFR ceilings due to low clouds and fog will
form from roughly 06Z to 15Z. Typically gusty diurnal winds to
near 25 knots expected until sunset.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/...
Issued at 1252 PM CDT Wed Aug 12 2026
VFR conditions are expected this afternoon before increasing
impacts from convection arrive from the west at both terminals.
Timing of convection arrival is somewhat uncertain but generally
favors the early evening for both sites. Some late afternoon
potential will exist but confidence is too low to mention at
this time. While some severe convection is possible with strong
outflow winds and hail possible, all activity should be capable
of heavy rain and will likely lead to at least low-end MVFR if
not IFR/LIFR conditions in brief stints. Thunderstorms should
taper off early Thursday morning but low stratus will envelope
the area and should allow for at least MVFR CIGs to persist.
Some signals indicate IFR CIGs, potentially LIFR, but will defer
on inserting this mention for now until confidence increases.

.AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z THURSDAY/...
Issued at 1133 AM MDT Wed Aug 12 2026
VFR conditions are forecast through the afternoon for each
terminal. Winds are forecast to become breezy this afternoon
around 15-20 knots sustained. Convection is forecast to develop
across eastern Colorado and send out a boundary which will shift
winds to the west. There is a 10-20% chance an isolated storms
may develop near GLD. A slightly better potential for storms for
MCK so have included a PROB30 for this. Overnight a cold front
is forecast to move through and shift winds to the northeast.
With the front stratus is forecast to develop with at least IFR
conditions looking likely. Some fog may be possible but with
winds remaining around 10-15 kts that should help limit how low
visibilities fall. Stratus is forecast to linger through at
least the end of this TAF period .

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1220 PM MDT Wed Aug 12 2026
Moisture is increasing across western New Mexico, and this will
lead to more shower and thunderstorm activity, posing the usual
aviation weather hazards of gusty downburst winds, small hail, and
lightning along with brief reductions to ceilings and visibility
in any downpours. While the strongest storms will occur through
the late afternoon and early evening, a transition to more showery
activity is forecast to linger through the overnight hours and
into early Thursday. Smoke from wildfires, particularly north of
KSAF, will pose localized reductions to visibility. Density
altitude readings will also remain high due to hot temperatures,
posing poor aircraft performance for some. Another active
thunderstorm day is forecast for Thursday, mainly for western and
portions of northern New Mexico.
