VFR conditions are expected through the TAF period.
Instead of the typical drainage winds overnight, we`ve
predominantly kept a weak west/northwest direction at the
terminals, which is expected to continue through the mid-morning
hours. Winds are then expected to become more variable before
eventually settling on an east/southeast direction this afternoon.
Main concern in the TAF window will be the potential for TS
impacts after about 21-22z this afternoon. The last several cycles
of the HRRR have insisted on convective initiation somewhere in
the metro around 23-00z, which then lifts northeastward through
the evening hours. This solution is largely supported by the HREF
and REFS ensemble members. Given the relatively sparse convective
coverage, the PROB30 still seems appropriate for now, but may be
turned into a TEMPO later today if forecast confidence increases.
Once convection exits the area in the evening, winds are likely to
turn back towards typical drainage flow and continue into Monday
morning.

VFR conditions at all three terminals (KALS, KCOS, KPUB)
through the next 24 hours. KALS will see southerly winds
increase this afternoon to near 10 kts. Removed the PROB30 for
-TSRA at KCOS this afternoon. Model guidance continues to keep
the terminal dry, with all thunderstorm activity well north
over the Palmer Divide. If a storm does develop south, the
22z-02z time frame may see gusty winds. Easterly winds are
forecast near 10 to 12 kts at KPUB this afternoon. Mid and high
clouds will impact all three terminals through much of the
forecast period.

high level clouds passing through at times. The most probable
threat of a thunderstorm or shower will be over KVEL tomorrow
afternoon and evening. Better moisture arrives late with
precipitation coverage increasing early Monday into much of
eastern Utah and western Colorado. Flight conditions less than
VFR appear unlikely.

KSLC...Southerly winds remain generally light overnight into Sunday
morning, gradually increasing after 14z. Winds further increase
around 20z, with gusts exceeding 25 kts developing through the
evening. An influx of tropical moisture into northern Utah will
result in gradually increasing cloud cover and lowering CIGS Sunday
morning. Steady rainfall is expected to move into the vicinity of
the terminal after 20z, with potential to produce brief MVFR CIGS
through the evening.
REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...Gusty southerly winds across
the airspace taper overnight before increasing gradually after
roughly 13-16z. Wind gusts in excess of 25 kts are expected to
develop through the afternoon for most regional terminals. An influx
of tropical moisture into the region will result in gradually
increasing cloud cover overnight into Sunday morning, with lowering
CIGS as widespread rain moves in from the south through the day.
Showers and thunderstorms taper off by early Monday morning.

VFR conditions should continue through around 21Z at all TAF
sites. Following that, a weather system moving in from the south
and west will move northward across the area and bring
increasing clouds and chances of showers. The arrival of showers
has been slowed by a couple of hours. The best chance of
precipitation is still expected to be in the western terminals,
with the best chance in vicinity of KJAC. At KJAC, there is a 25
to 30 percent chance of moderate rain and potential MVFR
ceilings or visibilities after 08Z Monday. Breezy conditions
will develop again at most terminals, with the strongest gusts
in vicinity of KCPR where gusts to 24 knots will be possible at
times after 22Z Sunday.

Kind of a tricky forecast as the Hi-res models are a little
conflicted in the storm locations. Half the models keep the
storms on the west side of I-25 mainly affecting KRWL and KLAR.
The other half paints destructive storms east of I-25 affecting
all the Nebraska Terminals except KSNY this time. TAFs were
favoring storms east of I-25 beginning at 00z and ending around
07z. Under the stronger thunderstorms expect torrential rainfall
dropping visibility down between 1sm and 3sm. Large hail and
variable wind gusts up to 55 knots are also possible. Another
wave of morning rainfall is expected to push through from west
to east around 13z for KRWL and 18z for the Panhandle terminals.

VFR conditions are expected through the forecast period.
Widespread rain and general thunderstorms continue to depart to
the east, leaving KLBF/KVTN dry for the remainder of the
daytime. Skies will gradually clear before some diurnal clouds
develop this afternoon. High level clouds will increase tonight
as convection develops well to the west and cloud debris overspreads
the area. This convection is largely expected to remain well
west of the area though with no direct impacts otherwise.
Ensemble guidance hints at MVFR conditions for northern Nebraska
late tonight including the KVTN terminal. Forecast soundings
suggest potential for IFR conditions but will defer inclusion of
this to later forecasts and highlight MVFR CIGs for now.

VFR conditions are expected to prevail at both KGLD and KMCK
through the period. Storms are expected to impact KMCK starting
around 730Z +/-45 minutes. Cannot rule out brief IFR
visibilities at KMCK if a heavy storms moves over, but it would
be fairly short lived. KGLD has a much lower chance at seeing
any precipitation before 10Z. Precipitation at KMCK looks to
leave around 10-13Z, then both sites will start getting stronger
south-southeasterly winds throughout the day. Would not be
surprised if we see occasional gusts up to 35 kts, but most
should be under 30 kts.
There is also a 10% chance of IFR stratus after the
precipitation, and a 10% chance of additional storms Sunday
evening.

Good flying weather will continue through this TAF period, with
VFR persisting, variable amounts of mid/high clouds, and light
winds. Radar imagery at 0915z Sun depicted scattered showers
near HYS, GCK and LBL, but remaining activity is expected to
dissipate over the next few hours through sunrise. No
thunderstorms are expected Sunday afternoon/evening, and the
upcoming set of TAFs will be dry.

By this afternoon, moisture and instability for storms will
persist along and east of the central mountain chain, but will
also expand over more of the southwestern to west central
mountains in the afternoon. A few isolated storms will struggle to
develop toward the Jemez and Tusas as well. Storms will be slow-
moving, leading to heavy downpours which will reduce ceilings and
visibility temporarily. Small hail, lots of lightning, and gusty
downburst winds to 45 kt will also accompany stronger storms.
Storms will have a hard time moving and redeveloping into the
middle to lower Rio Grande valley through the early evening with
only a few showers and weaker storms surviving through the late
overnight hours into Monday morning.
