Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
825 PM MDT Mon Aug 18 2025

.DISCUSSION...Skies are mostly clear except for smoke. After the
last few nights of storms, the tranquility of tonight`s weather
shift is noticeable. Unfortunately, smoke will likely deteriorate
in the coming days as dry and hot weather intensifies in the
Boise area, and all of southeast Oregon and southwest Idaho. No
ch-ch-ch-changes (Bowie) are needed this evening.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR. Mostly clear skies. Local visibility reductions in
the W-Central ID Mountains due to wildfire smoke. KTWF and KJER
could (30% chance) see visibility reduction from smoke late tonight
though Tuesday from Cottonwood Peak fire in N`rn NV. Surface winds:
mostly variable 10 kts or less. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: S-SW 20-30
kt.

KBOI...VFR. Smoke layers aloft moving this evening from the south.
Surface winds: NW under 10 kt this evening becoming light and
variable by midnight.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night...A ridge of high
pressure will build over the Four Corners region early this
week, keeping temperatures hot over our area. Highs will be 5-10
degrees above normal, with slight moderation midweek thanks to
a weak shortwave from the West. Smoke from wildfires in Nevada
and the Idaho mountains will bring hazy skies to the region,
primarily in southwest Idaho. Breezy westerly winds will occur
primarily in southern Harney County and near the ID- NV border
each afternoon, with gusts up to 20-30 mph in the Lower Snake
River Plain on Wednesday. Exiting moisture to our east will keep
a low chance of showers and thunderstorms in the West Central
Mountains east of McCall, ID on Tuesday evening.

LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday...The Four Corners ridge will
remain in place through the extended period, maintaining above
normal temperatures and a continued threat for thunderstorms. By
Thursday, enough monsoon moisture should reach our CWA to bring
around a 15 percent chance of thunderstorms near the NV/ID border.
Any storms that do develop will likely produce strong outflow winds
but little rainfall due to lingering low-level dryness. Highs in the
lower valleys will be in the mid 90s on Thursday, then gradually
climb into the weekend as the ridge strengthens overhead. This
pattern could lead to a prolonged stretch of hot weather along with
expanding coverage of monsoon moisture, spreading west into southern
Oregon as well as southern Idaho. Temperatures around 100 degrees
are possible over the weekend, along with a better chance of
thunderstorms and an uptick in fire danger from lightning.
