Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
310 PM MDT Thu Jul 17 2025

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Saturday night...Flow aloft has
shifted to the west-southwest which has allowed some mid level
moisture to move into the area. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms expected long the NV border this afternoon, mainly
over the higher terrain of the Owyhee Mountains and southern
Twin Falls highlands. Wildfire smoke remains over the area from
fires in western OR and northern CA, with reduced visibilities
aloft. Isolated thunderstorms expected along the NV border and
Owyhee Mountains and in central OR west of Harney County through
this evening. Main threats with the thunderstorms will be gusty
erratic outflow winds up to 45 mph. The thunderstorm threat
shifts east into central and eastern Idaho on Friday, with
isolated thunderstorms generally east of a line from Mountain
Home to Stanley. Temperatures will be around 100F in the lower
valleys again on Friday. By Saturday, dry air is advected into
the rest of the area with breezy conditions and slightly cooler
conditions as a trough slowly moves south across British
Columbia. Temperatures lower around 5 to 8 degrees on Saturday.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday...A potent upper-level
longwave troughing pattern will continue to move through the
Pacific Northwest to start the period. It will become overhead
of the area early Monday. This will cause temperatures to be 5
degrees below normal Monday and Tuesday. Precipitation chances
will also increase to notable amounts Monday and Tuesday, with
PoPs hovering near 15-20% along our northern and western zones.
Thunderstorms will be possible during the afternoon into evening
time period. The upper-level trough will linger through Tuesday,
and then the portion over Northern California will split into a
cutoff low while the rest of the troughing will carry off to the
east. With this semi-permanent low off the California coast
through the extended, southwest flow will be dominant Wednesday
onward. This will cause temperatures to be near normal Wednesday
and Thursday. This pattern will keep afternoon winds breezy
through the period.
