Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
825 PM MDT Wed Jul 16 2025

.DISCUSSION...Visible satellite imagery showed smoke aloft over
roughly the southern half of the area this evening (generally
south of a line from Burns to Boise to Fairfield). In addition,
smoke from a fire over extreme NE Valley County was providing
the only significant low-level smoke we saw. Smoke models
indicate a worsening of the smoke in both surface and aloft the
next few days.

&&

.AVIATION...Mainly VFR. Patchy smoke, mainly aloft. Smoke may reach
KBNO and KBKE overnight and early morning. Isolated thunderstorms
expected along ID-NV border and near KTWF Thursday afternoon.
Surface winds: NW 5-15 kt, becoming light and variable tonight.
Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: W 15-25 kt.

KBOI...VFR and clear. Smoke aloft possible tomorrow morning. Surface
winds: NW 5-15 kt, becoming SE 3-8 kt tonight and through tomorrow
morning.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...Tonight through Friday night...Northwest flow will
continues over the area through Thursday morning as a trough
remains over British Columbia. A weak trough off the CA coast
will shift the flow to southwest aloft on Thursday afternoon,
allowing temperatures to warm around 5-10 degrees for Thursday
and Friday. Temperatures in the lower valleys warm to the low
100s Thursday and Friday. Monsoon moisture from the Four Corners
region will approach the NV border on Thursday afternoon, for a
slight chance of showers and thunderstorms south of the Snake
Plain. On Friday the moisture will generally be pushed eastward,
but a slight chance of thunderstorms remains in southern Twin
Falls County eastward.

LONG TERM...Saturday through Wednesday...A trough over BC will
begin to dive southward on Saturday and Sunday, bringing cooler
and breezy conditions. Moisture is limited with this system, but
Monday afternoon into Tuesday is the highest chance (10-15
percent) of receiving precipitation. Temperatures will be around
3 to 5 degrees below normal.
