Tropical Weather Discussion
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
0015 UTC Sun Apr 20 2025

Tropical Weather Discussion for North America, Central America
Gulf of America, Caribbean Sea, northern sections of South
America, and Atlantic Ocean to the African coast from the
Equator to 31N. The following information is based on satellite
imagery, weather observations, radar and meteorological analysis.

Based on 1800 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through
2225 UTC.

...SPECIAL FEATURES...

East Atlantic Gale Warning: Meteo-France has issued a Gale Warning
for the AGADIR Zone. N winds to Force 8 will prevail from now
through 20/0600 UTC, with 10-12 ft seas. For more information,
please see the latest HIGH SEAS FORECAST and WARNING issued by
Meteo-France at website:
https://wwmiws.wmo.int/index.php/metareas/affiche/2

...MONSOON TROUGH/ITCZ...

The monsoon trough enters the Atlantic through the coast of Sierra
Leone near 08N13W, then continues to 02N19W. The ITCZ extends
from 02N19W to 01S45W. Scattered showers are in the vicinity of
both boundaries, with scattered strong convection evident inland
over Africa.

GULF OF AMERICA...

Strong high pressure centered near Bermuda extends across the Gulf
of America. The pressure gradient between the high pressure and
lower pressure over Mexico and Texas is producing fresh to strong
E-SE winds and 7-10 ft seas in the SE Gulf, especially the Florida
Straits, off northern Yucatan and off Texas. Moderate or weaker
winds and slight to moderate seas are prevalent elsewhere.

For the forecast, fresh to strong E winds will pulse across portions
of the SW Gulf as a trough moves NW off the Yucatan Peninsula
each afternoon and evening into Mon. Fresh to strong E winds and
rough seas will persist in the Florida Straits into early next
week.

CARIBBEAN SEA...

A weak surface trough persists across the Virgin Islands, with a
few showers in the vicinity. The pressure gradient between the
Atlantic subtropical high and lower pressure over South America
results in strong to near gale-force easterly trade winds in the
south-central Caribbean, off southern Hispaniola, Windward
Passage and lee of Cuba. Seas in these are 7-10 ft, except 2-5 ft
in the lee of Cuba. The strongest winds and highest seas are found
off NW Colombia. Moderate to locally fresh breezes and moderate
seas prevail elsewhere.

For the forecast, strong high pressure north of the basin will
support fresh to strong NE winds across the central and western
Caribbean through early next week before diminishing through the
middle of next week. Near- gale force winds will pulse off
Colombia during the overnight hours, accompanied by rough seas.
Large northerly swell will impact the Mona and Anegada passages by
Sun, then gradually subside through the middle of next week.

ATLANTIC OCEAN...

Please see the Special Features for the Gale Warning in effect for
the Agadir Zone in the NE Atlantic.

A surface trough extends from a weak 1020 mb low pressure system
centered near 31N55W to the Virgin Islands. The pressure gradient
between a robust ridge near Bermuda and the aforementioned low
pres and trough result in fresh to strong N-NE winds over much of
the SW North Atlantic, especially west of the surface trough. The
strongest winds are occurring in the western semicircle of the low
and also south of 25N and west of 66W. Moderate to rough seas are
noted in the SW North Atlantic, with seas peaking around 12 ft
west of the low pres.

The remainder of the tropical Atlantic is dominated by an
expansive subtropical ridge positioned near the Azores. This ridge
forces moderate to fresh easterly winds and seas of 5-8 ft west of
20W. A tighter pressure gradient near Africa allow for fresh to
strong N-NE winds and seas of 8-11 ft north of 20N and east of
20W. Elsewhere across the Atlantic, moderate to locally fresh
trades and 4-7 ft seas prevail.

For the forecast west of 55W, surface trough extends from near
31N55W to near 19N60W. The pressure gradient between this trough
and high pressure centered NW of Bermuda will support fresh to
strong NE to E winds and rough seas through the weekend from the
Bahamas to the Greater Antilles. Winds and seas will slowly
diminish west of 70W early next week. Closer to the trough, where
weak low pressure will also meander, strong winds and rough seas
could prevail.
