...AN APPRECIABLY DRIER AND WARMER THAN NORMAL AUGUST FOR SOUTHEAST
ALASKA...

The main reason that the daily average temperatures and liquid
precipitation across the entire region was skewed warmer and drier
was that for approximately the first 2/3 of the month, it was
significantly warmer and drier than normal for all 4 climate sites
and for all of the rest of Southeast Alaska as we remained under a
dominant strong blocking ridge of high pressure for the vast
majority of that time. The weather for about the last third of the
month was much more normal for the Panhandle with frontal systems
pushing through, some with associated Atmospheric Rivers, bringing
cooler and wetter conditions to the entire region, moderating the
final temperature averages and precipitation amounts a bit for the
month to make them not quite as significantly warm and dry as they
would have been if the trend that started the month had carried
through to the rest of the month. According to the U. S. Drought
Monitor, appreciable drought conditions were still being experienced
over the southern third of the Panhandle toward the end of the month
with only marginal improvements.

As far as records are concerned for the month, on August 4th, Juneau
Airport hit 82, which broke their old high temperature record of 80
degrees set in 1999. On that same day, Sitka Airport hit 79, which
broke their record of 74 degrees set in 2009. On the 5th, Juneau
Airport tied their old record of 81 degrees, which was originally
set in 2017. On the 6th, Juneau Airport tied their record with 81
degrees, once again, which was originally set in 2023. Finally, on
the 18th of the month, Juneau Airport, once again, tied a record
high temperature. The record was 79 degrees, which was originally
set back in 1977.
