771 FXUS64 KAMA 052026 AFDAMA Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Amarillo TX 326 PM CDT Sat Sep 5 2026 ...New KEY MESSAGES, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 324 PM CDT Sat Sep 5 2026 -Above average temperatures expected to continue with a slight reduction in afternoon highs by a couple of degrees. -PDC less likely to see a heat advisory after today. However, conditions will remain warm in the lower 100s with some heat impacts expected. -The daily pattern of afternoon convection will continue Saturday afternoon but shift to our far northwestern areas on Sunday. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Sunday night) Issued at 324 PM CDT Sat Sep 5 2026 Not much has changed in the forecast. For this afternoon, above average temperatures continue with highs in the upper 90s to lower 100s. A heat advisory remains in effect for PDC as the canyon floor may still push highs around 105. Once again, isolated to scattered showers are expected across the central to western combined Panhandles this afternoon into evening, with the potential for some gusty winds in the 40 to 50 mph range. CAMs are not excited about about activity until this evening into the overnight hours when a shortwave may move into the northwest to northern combined Panhandles. But will not rule out an isolated storm or two in the western Panhandles during the late late afternoon. However, confidence is low at this time with late afternoon activity most likely running into issue from lack of lift and collapsing before producing any localized beneficial rainfall. Tomorrow, slightly cooler H85 temperatures are progged, with afternoon highs maybe a couple of degrees cooler than today. A bit more negative theta-e advection into the eastern combined Panhandles may push shower and thunderstorm chances further west/northwest in the combined Panhandle. Highest PoPs for Sunday afternoon remain northwest of the Texline/Boise City line, and diminish going into the evening. && .LONG TERM... (Monday through next Friday) Issued at 324 PM CDT Sat Sep 5 2026 During the long term, Monday into Friday, high pressure continues to dominate the region leaving afternoon highs in the 90s. With the high pressure expected to go through a slight evolution and potential suppression, high temperatures may be held in the mid 90s, as opposed to the upper 90s to 105 range seen of lately. Still above average for this time of year. Also, the high pressure over the region is expected to limit PoPs despite decent H7 moisture staying in place. With weak looking synoptics the current forecast only has slight chance to chance PoPs returning Wed night, across the northern combined Panhandles. With the H5 high expected to shift west of the Panhandles Thursday, weak northwest flow may contribute to some shower/thunderstorm activity. At this time the NBM is only giving a slight chance PoPs for Thu/Thu night but is covering more of the combined Panhandles. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1034 AM CDT Sat Sep 5 2026 VFR conditions are expected to prevail through the TAF period, with the exception of prob30 for thunderstorms after 00Z Sun. At this time confidence remains low for KAMA with no prob30 groups listed at this time. Amendments may potentially be needed for isolated to scattered thunder activity between 00Z and 06Z Sunday. && .AMA WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... TX...Heat Advisory until 8 PM CDT this evening for TXZ317. OK...None. && $$ SHORT TERM...03 LONG TERM....03 AVIATION...03
