...Severe Weather Awareness Week Begins Today...

April 20 to April 26 is Severe Weather Awareness
Week in New York and New England.

Severe weather happens here. In 2024, thunderstorms
produced 32 tornadoes in New York, while Massachusetts
and Connecticut saw 1 tornado each and Vermont had none.
Additionally, thunderstorms also caused hundreds of
reports of damaging wind across New York and New England
and dozens of reports of large hail. Every thunderstorm
contains deadly lightning and thunderstorms often produce
heavy rainfall responsible for flash floods.

This week we will discuss severe weather terminology and
safety. Everyone is urged to be weather ready by learning
how to protect themselves from the hazards of flooding,
tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and lightning.

Monday we review severe weather terms and definitions.

Tuesday the focus is on severe thunderstorms.

Wednesday we turn to severe weather preparedness and safety.

Thursday will feature a study of tornadoes with a
review of thunderstorm
safety.

Friday is the day to look at the summer flood threat and
provide some
safety rules.

Finally, on Saturday we will review the key items from this
week focusing on preparedness and safety.

Are You Weather Ready? Taking steps now to prepare for
severe weather will help you keep safe and enjoy summer.
Be smart. Take part. Prepare.
