.DISCUSSION...
Critical fire weather conditions continue over the next 24 hours
as hot temperatures, low RH values, and breezy winds are
forecasted; not the time to become complacent. Watch Out Situation
14 comes to mind.
Areas northwest, east, and southeast of Fairbanks:
Friday overnight winds were not as strong as originally
anticipated. Only areas with relatively clear skies along
ridgetops appeared to see the expected winds. Areas under heavy
smoke did not see the expected winds as the winds were above the
smoke layer and could not effectively mix down into the hills. It
is possible that daytime heating will aid in mixing enough to
allow these winds to reach the surface Saturday. For areas where
this mixing is strong enough to allow the winds to get through the
smoke layer easterly gusts up to 25 mph are possible for most of
Saturday. The areas that are most likely to mix these stronger
winds down to the surface will be areas with clear skies Saturday
afternoon. Very limited cloud cover is expected, but areas of
thick smoke can limit surface heating enough to prevent this
mixing. Winds are expected to shift southerly Saturday evening
into Saturday night.
Saturday temperatures are expected to reach their peaks,
likely into the upper 80s, with southerly exposed RAWS sites
reaching 90. Minimum RH values will plummet back down to the low
20s to upper teens. Breezy winds continue from the east but
expecting gusts to largely remain below 25 mph.
Fires near/along the Alaska Range:
We anticipate southerly winds increasing through the gaps
Saturday afternoon in response to a tight pressure gradient
between a high in the gulf of Alaska and a thermal low in the
Interior. Expect sustained southerly winds of 15 to 20 mph, with
gusts reaching 35 mph, out of the passes. These winds will
diminish by late Saturday night.
By Sunday/Monday we anticipate a pattern change with the ridge
breaking down, bringing thunderstorms as moisture moves in from
the southeast. While not a season ending event, expect scattered
showers with cooler temperatures and increasing RH.
