Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High


SYNOPSIS...Low pressure in the central Bering Sea moves eastward and
dissipates through mid-week. Another low near Kamchatka moves into
the far western Chukchi Sea by late-week. High pressure remains over
much of the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Winds along the Beaufort coast will remain light
easterly. Expect sea ice to continue to move east to west around 5-
10 nm/day. Much of the shorefast ice will degrade through the week.

Ice covered.

The main ice edge extends from near Espenberg to 68 47N 169 30W to
69 28N 168 19W to 69 14N 172 28W and continues south to the
Russian coast. The ice edge is open water.


From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Espenberg to 65 nm west of Point Hope to 75 nm northwest of
Point Hope  to 130 nm west of Point Hope and continues south to the
Russian coast. The ice edge is open water.



FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Easterly winds will continue along the ice edge
through Wednesday. Expect the ice between Espenberg and Point Hope
to continue to move northwest along the coast while melting. The ice
should decay to marginal ice by Saturday. Otherwise expect a general
melting/retreat of the ice edge 10 to 20 nm by Saturday.
