Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High

SYNOPSIS...A low over the Chukchi Sea will move east across the
Beaufort Sea on Tuesday. High pressure will then persist across the
Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Beaufort Sea on Wednesday before two
different lows track east into the Chukchi Sea and Bering Sea on
Thursday. Low pressure will spread across the Beaufort Sea by
Saturday.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Off the north coast of Alaska, variable winds
will persist into Tuesday and then shift westerly through Wednesday.
From Thursday through Saturday, winds become generally southerly.
Sea ice will continue to gradually melt, and the sea ice within the
marginal zone near the coast will move to the east on Wednesday and
then generally to the north starting on Thursday.

PKZ858-Cape Beaufort to Point Franklin from 15 to 85 nm-

The main ice edge extends from near Utqiagvik to 70 59N 159 59W to
71 32N 167 37W to 70 4N 170 32W to 71 28N 174 11W and
continues into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Utqiagvik to 60 nm west-southwest of Utqiagvik to 200 nm west
of Utqiagvik to 110 nm northwest of Cape Lisburne to 215 nm
northwest of Cape Lisburne and continues into Russian waters. The
ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Northwesterly winds will persist through Tuesday
and then shift southerly through Saturday. Expect sea ice to
continue melting and retreat to the north for a majority of the
forecast period.
