909 FZAK80 PAFC 132246 ICEAFC Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters National Weather Service - Alaska Sea Ice Program 246 PM AKDT Wednesday 13 August 2025 FORECAST VALID...Monday 18 August 2025 ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High SYNOPSIS...High pressure will build over the Bering Sea through most of the forecast period until a low enters from the North Pacific on Monday. Over the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, high pressure builds through most of the forecast period, however a period of low pressure develops on Saturday and Sunday. -BEAUFORT SEA- PKZ505-Central US Arctic Offshore- PKZ510-Eastern US Arctic Offshore- Ice covered. PKZ813-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett out to 15 nm- PKZ814-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island out to 15 nm- PKZ859-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett from 15 to 75 nm- PKZ860-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island from 15 to 80 nm- PKZ861-Flaxman Island to Demarcation Point from 15 to 75 nm- The main ice edge in the Beaufort Sea extends from near 70 11N 146 8W to 70 34N 145 39W to 70 48N 142 34W to 70 17N 142 27W to 70 21N 140 33W and continues east into Canadian waters. The ice edge is open water. From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge in the Beaufort Sea extends from 20 nm east of Flaxman Island to 35 nm northeast of Flaxman Island to 40 nm north-northeast of Kaktovik to 25 nm northeast of Kaktovik to 40 nm north of Demarcation Point and continues east into Canadian waters. The ice edge is open water. FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence is high. Northerly to northwesterly winds will persist through Friday and then become southeasterly on Saturday, westerly on Sunday, and southerly on Monday. Overall, expect sea ice to continue melting and for ice free and open water areas near the coast to continue expanding. -CHUKCHI SEA- PKZ500-Western US Arctic Offshore- PKZ505-Central US Arctic Offshore- Ice covered. PKZ813-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett out to 15 nm- PKZ858-Cape Beaufort to Point Franklin from 15 to 85 nm- PKZ859-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett from 15 to 75 nm- The main ice edge in the Chukchi Sea extends from near Ikiak to 71 28N 156 41W to 71 4N 159 54W to 72 7N 164 9W to 71 29N 169 51W and continues west into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water. There is an area of marginal ice near the international border at approximately 70 6N 168 51W. From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge in the Chukchi Sea extends from near Ikiak to 10 nm north of Utqiagvik to 25 nm north of Wainwright to 115 nm northwest of Wainwright to 190 nm west- northwest of Wainwright and continues west into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water. There is an area of marginal ice near the international border 135 nm west of Icy Cape. FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence is high. Westerly winds shift southerly from Thursday through Saturday, westerly on Sunday, and then southerly on Monday. Expect the ice pack to continue degrading through the forecast period. Winds will bring the ice edge northward Thursday through Saturday, eastward on Sunday, and then northward again on Monday. && Fenrich
