ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...Moderate. SYNOPSIS...Low pressure over the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea will gradually give way to high pressure, which will then persist into the weekend. A low over the Gulf of Alaska will spread low pressure northward into the Beaufort Sea later Saturday through Monday. FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence is high. Westerly winds will persist through Thursday before shifting northeasterly from Friday through Sunday. Winds then become westerly again on Monday. Expect the ice pack to drift eastward around 5 nm/day through Thursday, southwestward from Friday through Sunday, and then eastward again on Monday. During periods of westerly winds, shorefast ice may continue to break-off. Northerly winds will give way to more variable winds starting on Thursday as a low transits across the Point Hope/Kivalina area and as high pressure builds. Through Friday, light and variable winds will favor ice moving with the tides and currents. Over the weekend, easterly winds develop over the northern Chukchi and generally northerly winds develop over the southern Chukchi. By Monday, widespread northerly winds spread across the Chukchi Sea. Expect little ice pack movement during the periods of light and variable winds. The ice edge is open water. From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from near Egegik to 75 nm south of Cape Newenham to 160 nm south of Cape Mohican to 250 nm south of Gambell and continues into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water. FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence is high. Across the eastern Bering Sea, westerly winds become northerly from Thursday through Monday. During this time, expect the ice edge to advance around 10 to 15 nm/day.
