Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High

SYNOPSIS...Broad high pressure will slowly drift east across the
Chukchi and Beaufort Seas through Monday. A low will move northeast
to the Chukchi Sea Sunday and Monday, then northeast across the
Beaufort Sea on Tuesday and Wednesday.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Off the north coast of Alaska, winds will be
easterly Thursday, becoming northerly Friday. Winds will return to
easterly late Saturday, persisting through Monday. Winds shift
Monday to southwesterly then westerly as a surface low passes from
the Chukchi Sea to the Beaufort Sea. Sea ice will continue to
gradually melt, and the sea ice within the marginal ice zone near
the coast will generally move south through Saturday, west Sunday
and east Monday through Wednesday.

The main ice edge extends from near Utqiagvik to 70 56N 166 29W to
69 38N 168 51W to 69 50N 171 35W and continues into Russian
waters. The ice edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Utqiagvik to 180 nm west of Utqiagvik to 75 nm northwest of
Cape Lisburne to 150 nm northwest of Cape Lisburne and continues
into Russian waters. The ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Northeasterly to easterly winds will persist
through Saturday, then winds will become southwesterly Sunday
through Monday as the low approaches from the southwest. Expect the
ice to continue slowly retreating to the northwest as sea ice melts
along the ice edge and for the pack ice to continue breaking up and
melting through Wednesday.
