Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...Moderate.

SYNOPSIS...A low near Kodiak Island will linger there as it
gradually weakens through the week. Another low from the North
Pacific will track east across the Bering Sea through Saturday. High
pressure will persist over the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas through
Saturday.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Northeasterly to easterly winds will persist
through Thursday, and then winds will shift northwesterly for Friday
and Saturday. Expect sea ice to drift west-southwestward through
Thursday and then easterly on Saturday. Sea ice near the Alaska
coastline will likely move very little overall.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Northerly to easterly winds will generally
persist through Saturday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, winds may become
light and variable. The polynya off the northwest coast of Alaska
will persist and continue to fill in with new ice and multi-year sea
ice will continue to drift west to southwest across the Chukchi Sea.
South of Point Hope, sea ice is expected to remain fairly stationary
through Saturday.

The main ice edge extends from near Quinhagak to 59 13N 163 26W to
59 31N 164 19W to 56 51N 169 32W to 57 12N 170 58W to 60 32N
179 52W and continues into Russian waters. The ice edge is open
water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
near Quinhagak to 45 nm southeast of Kipnuk to 25 nm southwest of
Kipnuk to 15 nm north of Saint George to 25 nm west of Saint Paul to
215 nm west of Saint Matthew Island and continues into Russian
waters. The ice edge is open water.

FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast confidence
is high. Northerly to northwesterly winds will persist across the
Bering Sea ice pack through Wednesday. Then, winds become easterly
to southeasterly from Thursday through Saturday. Polynyas will
continue to expand and will generally remain open, especially south
of Saint Lawrence Island and Nunivak Island, and also across
northeastern Norton Sound. Sea ice has reached Saint Paul Island,
but warmer waters around the Pribilof Islands will aid in the sea
ice melting. Later in the week when winds shift
easterly/southeasterly, sea ice will retreat away from the Pribilof
Islands.
