...KUSKOKWIM RIVER ICE JAM RELEASE AT ANIAK MOVING DOWNSTREAM
TOWARDS UPPER KALSKAG...

As of Sunday night through early Monday morning, the ice jam on the
Kuskokwim River near Aniak has released and is moving downstream.

Water levels are low in Aniak and there is no flood threat.
Re-jamming of ice is unlikely immediately downstream due to ice
degradation observed over the last several days, however the threat
increases closer to Upper Kalskag as there hasn`t been as much
shifting observed as upriver.

On May 2nd, the tripod at McGrath tipped, and ice originating in
that reach is flowing downriver. Open areas will see that run of ice
over the next few days; however, flooding remains unlikely. The
River Watch team will fly Bethel to Aniak today (Monday), then
downriver towards the mouth of the Johnson River.

NWS and the River Watch team will continue to reach out to local
community members for observations. River Watch will continue to fly
the river as weather permits to assess river conditions between
Bethel and Aniak, briefing communities along the way. To share any
local observations, please email anchorage.weather@noaa.gov.

Stay tuned for updates.
