Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
240 AM CDT Wed Jul 15 2026

.DISCUSSION...

Hot temperatures and dry conditions will persist today across
central and northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota. As
afternoon temperature readings climb into the mid to upper 90s and
dew point temperatures fall into the 50s, minimum relative humidity
values will fall to between 20 and 25 percent across parts of north
central South Dakota and adjacent West River areas. Gusty winds will
top out between 20-30 mph during the afternoon and this combined
with the drying fuels will lead to elevated fire weather conditions.
High Grassland Fire Danger will exist across north central South
Dakota today.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread. Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.

The outlook for Thursday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate to high category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Thursday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
