Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

.DISCUSSION...

Winds will be around 50 to 10 mph today, with relative humidity
falling to near 40 percent east of the James River while staying
above 50 percent elsewhere. Showers and a few thunderstorms will
overspread central South Dakota during the morning hours, and expand
to eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota this afternoon.
Rainfall of a tenth to near a half inch of rain is expected through
Friday morning, with the highest amounts south of U.S. Highway 12.
Relatively light winds will continue Friday with relative humidity of
40 percent or higher through the day.

After dry weather Friday night into Saturday morning, a 50 percent
chance of showers and thunderstorms will return to eastern South
Dakota and western Minnesota Saturday afternoon and evening. There is
a marginal risk of severe storms, or level 1 out of 5, Saturday
afternoon and evening. A few of the strongest storms could be capable
of producing large hail of around 1 inch in diameter or damaging
wind gusts of 60 mph.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low.  Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.


The outlook for Friday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
