Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
245 PM CDT Fri Aug 21 2026

.DISCUSSION...

Winds continue to be light, around 10 mph or less for all but south
central South Dakota, where they remain out of the east with a few
gusts in the 20 to 25 mph range. The driest air this afternoon will
stay over north central South Dakota, around 25 to 30 percent, while
staying above 35 percent elsewhere.

A ridge of high pressure will continue to build across the Northern
Plains, resulting in mainly dry weather through Saturday. Relative
humidity will fall mainly into the 30 to 40 percent range Saturday
afternoon, with winds out of the north to northeast at 5 to 15 mph in
the afternoon.

Our next 30 to 70 percent chance of showers and isolated
thunderstorms will move into central South Dakota Sunday night Sunday
evening before expanding to northeastern South Dakota and west
central Minnesota Sunday night.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Saturday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low to moderate category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Saturday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
