Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

.DISCUSSION...

Exiting high pressure and nearing low pressure from the west will
result in increasing winds out of the south today. Temperatures will
rise in the 70s east of the James River, and into the 80s west of
the James River. Increasing winds gusting 30 to near 40 mph, hot,
and dry conditions, will result in high to very high Grassland Fire
Danger Index values this afternoon. A Red Flag Warning remains in
effect this afternoon for portions of south central South Dakota.

Elevated fire weather concerns are expected Tuesday and Thursday,
with wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph, with a few locations gusting to
around 50 mph. These strong winds will be out of the northwest on
Tuesday, and out of the south on Thursday. Minimum relative humidity
much of the week will be 15 to 30%, with mainly dry weather
continuing.

...VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Very poor weather conditions and very low moisture content of
grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground,
indicate that dangerous burning conditions exist.  Fires will
spread rapidly and show erratic behavior. Outdoor burning is
not recommended.


The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high category.

...HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Unfavorable weather conditions and low moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there
is high potential for a fire to spread.  Outdoor burning should be
restricted to early morning or evening hours when wind speeds are
usually lower and the relative humidity is higher.


The outlook for Tuesday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high to very high category.
