Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
231 AM CDT Wed Apr 9 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Winds will increase out of the northwest through the day today, and
become 15 to 30 mph. The strongest winds, with gusts of 40 to near 45
mph will be possible this afternoon over north central South Dakota.
Relative humidity values over central South Dakota will fall to near
20 percent, while around 25 to 35 percent over northeastern South
Dakota and west central South Dakota. The pre-greenup fuels combined
with the low relative humidity and increased winds will result in
very high Grassland Fire Danger much of the area west of the James
River. A Red Flag Warning is in place for this afternoon across
much of central South Dakota. A weak cold front will sink south
across the region tonight, with around a 20 percent chance of rain
showers. Little to no precipitation is expected.

Slightly cooler temperatures and increased relative humidity are in
store for Thursday behind the cold front. Relative humidity of 20 to
30 percent will be mainly near and west of the Missouri River, with
values of 50 percent or greater east of the James River. Winds will
again be out of the northwest around 15 to 25 mph with gusts 25 to
near 35 mph.

indicate that dangerous burning conditions exist. Fires will
spread rapidly and show erratic behavior. Outdoor burning is
not recommended.

The outlook for Thursday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high to very high category.

The outlook for Thursday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate to high category.
