Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
222 PM CDT Fri Oct 10 2025

.DISCUSSION...

Conditions this afternoon remain fairly calm with clear skies and
light winds, not creating any fire weather concerns. By Saturday, a
low-level jet will move over the forecast area, bringing strong
surface wind gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour. The jet will progress
eastward Sunday, bringing similar strength winds to northeastern
South Dakota and western Minnesota. A low pressure center to the
north will bring a tightening pressure gradient behind the jet,
meaning strong northwesterly winds are expected to fill in behind
the southerly gusts. Still expecting speeds of 30 to 40 miles per
hour, but isolated gusts may reach as high as 45 miles per hour on
Sunday. Luckily, the presence of increasing moisture in the form of
a dew point increase from the upper 30s to the 50s will help keep
humidity high and minimize fire weather concerns. However, should a
fire start, it will likely be able to spread rapidly due to the
strong winds.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Saturday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high category.

probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.
