Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
222 PM CDT Wed May 6 2026

.DISCUSSION...

Northwesterly winds gusting to 25 miles per hour will continue for
the remained of the afternoon, dissipating this evening and into
overnight. At that point, winds become light and variable, although
are generally expected to have a southerly component to their
direction. By Thursday afternoon, winds once again shift to be out
of the northwest, increasing to 5 to 10 miles per hour, gusting to
15 to 20 (with the highest gusts expected over northeastern South
Dakota and western Minnesota). Temperatures Thursday afternoon
increase slightly to become closer to normal (highs in the mid 60s),
bringing afternoon humidity down below 25 percent. Despite the dry
conditions, Grassland Fire Danger is expected to remain at Low to
Moderate for the rest of this afternoon as well as Thursday
afternoon.

Temperatures increase slightly once again on Friday to the low 70s,
helping to push minimum afternoon humidity down below 25 percent
once again Friday afternoon. Grassland Fire Danger may reach the
High category over part of northern South Dakota, where the low
humidity will combine with northwesterly winds gusting to 25 to 35
miles per hour. While there is still uncertainty, areas of Red Flag
conditions Friday afternoon cannot be ruled out at this time.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Thursday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low to moderate category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Thursday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
