.DISCUSSION...
Southerly winds will be on the increase Tuesday morning before
switching out of the west/northwest by early afternoon. Sustained
winds will range between 20 to 35 mph with gusts in excess of 40 mph
for some locations. The Grassland Fire Danger Index will be moderate
to high Tuesday over portions of south central SD where any
lingering snow is expected to melt as temperatures will be above
freezing. The above freezing daytime temperatures will look to
continue on Wednesday. However, a strong cold front sweeping through
the region Wednesday evening and overnight will cause temperatures
to drop precipitously heading into Thursday morning. Behind the
frontal passage Wednesday night, very strong northwest sustained
winds of 30 to 45 mph with gusts in excess of 60 mph will be
possible, especially across and west of the Missouri River valley.
This is causing snow free or mostly snow free areas across central
and south central South Dakota to register a Grassland Fire Danger
Index outlook of high to very high Wednesday and Thursday.
